The habitat & birds….open
fields, saltmarsh, mudflats &
lagoons on the largest of the Dutch
Wadden Islands. Whooper & Bewick’s
Swans,Tundra Bean, Barnacle,White-fronted,
Dark & Pale-bellied Brent and
Black Brant Geese all occur, with
Lesser White-fronts regular on the
mainland. The shallow Wadden Sea holds
large flocks of sea-duck with the
mudflats attracting thousands of waders.
Extensive saltings attract Rough legged
Buzzard, Shore Lark, Snow Bunting
and Twite, whilst Goshawk, Peregrine
and Merlin are regular, along with
roosting Long-eared Owls. Also visiting
the excellent Oostvaardersplassen
reserve for more geese, sea duck especially
Smew and White-tailed Eagle, with
rarities regular at this time of year,
especially Red-breasted Goose, Glaucous
Gull & Waxwing. |
